I was shocked and upset when I called the financial aid office today to find out that the state grants previously offered will not be available for the 2009-2010 school year for Columbus State students. I did a little reading into the matter only to learn that some budget cut proposed by Ted Strickland is the reason the school will not be receiving state aid at all for the next year or so. So, like many other CSCC students, I will be left struggling to pay for my education. How do you all feel about the new state budget cuts?

Hey, Marquita, can you give any more information about this? Like specifically which grants you're talking about, how much money a typical student might miss out on, and so on?
I'm surprised you had to call financial aid to find this out--it seems like something that should have been announced.

I have the numbers from the State's SSI which is the college's share of state funds. This is how much CSCC recieves directly from the state each year:
FY 07 $45.2 Million
FY 08 $45.3 Million
FY 09 $ 52.2 Million was the originial projection, now projected to be $59.3 Million
FY 10 $63.7 Million
FY 11 $66.0 Million
If you recieve your grant from Columbus State, then there should be more money there for you. If you get it directly from the state, things should be about the same.
Interesting stuff, but...

...there was an article in the Dispatch last month that suggests there's more to it than those numbers; someone at Columbus State actually said none of our students would qualify for state grant money under the new scheme.
Anything more you all can dig up?
