A Newspaper Online Isn't a Newspaper

October 20, 2008 by Anonymous

Such a shame.

I like black ink on my fingertips, and I don't buy the reasoning (for Cougar News' transition from print to online). You see, I've been teaching for 40 years, and I've seen this movie before. It won't save money, and the students will not be served--they'll be pushed further into their own little hovel. Students want to sit around, drink coffee, and point at the newspaper.

Driving eveyone to the computer is a money thing--it ain't about nothing but that. "I see, will call it 'Green' and it will SELL."

I've enjoyed the publication and admire what you've started, but, knowing me, I'll never look it up on the computer (but I picked it up every time on the news stand and read it from front to back), and I believe many students will do the same.

It's not "community" on a computer because there's no ink on your fingers, no smell of coffee, and no essence of that person--whether it be that girl you want to kiss, or that boy you want to hold hands with, or that professor that you think just might teach you something that will enlighten your pathway to a finer life.

Well, I'm glad I got that off my chest--thanks for "listening."

I too miss reading the CougarNews paper. I do understand time's are changing, but at the same time I think there some value in the old print. It also changes the exposure where a physical paper would pick the interest of many people, were an online only seems to draw only those already interested.

Student did read the Cougar News in INK.

I just want to say that I know that alot of students and staff have ask me. WHERE is the COUGAR NEWS, I have been trying to pass the new web paper to as many as I can tell about it. I do get some very funny looks at times and then again, some will just say thank you, I didn't know that.

YES, I MISS THE BLACK AND WHITE PAPER TOO....
IT ALSO MADE MORE FUN TO DO THE JOB AS WELL.

Let's be realistic

Like many other newspapers around the country, the print edition of Cougar News went out of business.  It's as simple as that.  I miss the print edition, too, but that doesn't mean I'd be wiling to spend two or three dollars each week to read a print copy of Cougar News.
As far as the number of readers, so far The Explorer only has slightly fewer readers on average each month than the print Cougar News did.  And that's without any advertising of The Explorer other than word-of-mouth.  So The Explorer is off to a good start.
